In the summer of 2006 I was introduced to a fascinating breed called the Australian Kelpie. I was familiar with herding breeds but had never seen a Kelpie. I was moving to Oregon and purchasing a piece of property that had pasture land which of course leads you to purchase animals that can use that land. Sheep came onto the property and a help mate was needed for that. My first dogs where from the Deharos kennel. Wonderful working dogs from a breeder that had 30 years plus experience with ranch work and ranch dogs. I was very impressed with the Kelpie. They are intelligent, biddable and independant workers. The Deharos stud was built on the Karrawarra dogs bred by Tony Parsons.
I was a novice in handling stock and this breed made my days easy. In the spring of 2008 Santolina Sam was purchased and came to live with me. His pedigree was from the Riana stud which complemented the Karrawarra dogs. Thank you Bill Davis for sharing Sam with me. He has been a terrific worker and my constant companion. He and Deharos Nell have become my foundation dogs.
